Catastrophe WebQuest

Introduction

You have just been hired by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to launch their educational series nation-wide to junior college students. Throughout the country geoscience education has been lacking and it is now up to you to inform your counter-parts across the country of the wonders, and hazards, of geology.

Task

You will work in a collaborative group of three to gather information, arrange it, and display it in an informative and attractive brochure. Each group member will be responsible for a different component of the project.

landslide2010ColoradoUSGS

Geologist- find the geologic cause, areas susceptible to this type of catastrophe, warning signs, and possibilities of prediction.

Humanitarian- find what impact this has on people in the area, what can be done to help, also, what organizations generally respond and what do they do.

Economist- find out how much damage is done annually by this catastrophe, from where does the money for relief generally come, and how can areas and individuals prepare economically for this type of devastation.

As a group you will gather both information and illustrations (citing everything) to organize and layout a brochure to inform junior college students around the country about whichever catastrophe your group chooses.

Procedures

Each group member should use the links provided to gather the necessary information to address your particular area of expertise. Be sure each group member is doing the same type of catastrophe.

The group should all view the group materials for how the brochure should be completed. Clicke here for rubric.

Evaluation

Your group will be graded based upon completion of your brochure. You can use the rubric below to check for completeness of each required component.

Be sure to include:

  1. a nice title and introduction

  2. an explanation of the catastrophe, and why you are choosing to explain it to your peers,

  3. all three member’s section with the required three or four components,

  4. a closing to make all of the information relevant and interesting, and

  5. references in APA format.

    Conclusion

Dear Students of Patrick Henry Community College,

We at the United States Geological Survey are grateful for your endeavors with this project. The scientific literacy of the future graduates of junior college education will be greatly improved. Your hard work will now be an asset to students around the country.
